BELIZE
For the casino lover Belize has limited facilities - but they can be a welcome break from too much sea and sand, or from the cloistered cruise ship casinos. As for the rest of the country - casino action is steadily downhill from there. You can find "gaming rooms" in almost any city and town throughout Belize. Most of these are aimed at locals. They tend to be run-down and seedy, and are often attached or actually inside local Chinese greasy spoons. They are not recommended for visitors. Most of the slot machines are very old and some locals claim - rigged.
"Ecotourism," "sustainable tourism" and "responsible tourism" are terms used to describe tourism that focusses on appreciation and preservation of a country's flora, fauna, ecosystems and culture. Belize stands at the forefront of the ecotourism movement. Despite its small size, no other country can boast a greater percentage of its land mass dedicated to natural reserves, parks, and preserves. At the same time, Belize is pioneering community-based tourism projects that directly benefit small traditional communities in rural areas of the country.
Belize is often referred to as one of the Seven Underwater Wonders of the World. The world's second largest barrier reef runs parallel to its coast, at distances ranging from a few hundred feet at the northern tip of Ambergris Caye, to nearly forty miles at the southern-most tip of the country.
